Edmonton Journal App Reviews

New version a downgrade

This new version is slow and buggy. Nothing seems to work until _all_ the ads load. Crashes occasionally. The print is larger and far less news per article. They seem to be going for a dumbed down version like the free papers you find on the street corners. Lots of pics but little content.

Complete Garbage

Ive had the Edmonton Journal app on all my phones and tablets for years. Ive deleted this latest version from all of them, what a piece of garbage. Ads that take up the whole screen and everything is so glitchy and slow. An absolute waste of time. P.s. The new orange banner is ugly too!

I wish I never updated

The new version of this app is choppy and is prone to lag. I find the font and look to be okay, but looking nice is no consolation for lack of function.

Very good, not sure why everyones upset

The new journal app I thought is very well laid out, extremely readable and runs quite smoothly. I honestly dont know why so many people are giving it one star. I, for one, quite like that they no longer have comments. I find that comments on news articles tend to detract from the actual news itself and almost always end up turning into some form of uneducated argument. Secondly, although the ads are fairly large, they dont feel very obtrusive and I honestly would rather see the occasional advertisement than pay for a monthly subscription. However again, that is just my opinion. Also, I have not experienced any problems with crashing or lagging that some others have reported, although Im sure it might vary on what device you have, the app itself runs well on my 5c. Lastly, to everyone rating it one star because its now orange: Are you serious? Youre rating an app one star because they changed the colour of their theme? I think you may want to reevaluate your priorities if the biggest issue you have with how your news aggregate is its colour. And honestly, I kind of think the orange looks fresh!

Articles are cut short

The articles are cut short mid-sentence. I cant scroll to read more. No point reading if Im missing a portion of the article.

Jerky scroll

Hard to scroll through the news feed when it keeps freezing for a second. Also the ads are so big that you end up going to safari for the ad page when you just want to scroll down.

Commenting broken

I find this app more than adequate for reading & finding stories, but when it comes to reader commenting, it is seriously broken. The text input window seizes up and you cannot backspace to edit typos or refine wording. It simply stops accepting input. It also wont accept copied and pasted text from another application, such as Notes, that might be used to compose longer & more complex comment posts. This problem only exists in the app, not in the web version of the paper. This should be fixed. Credible, intelligent commenters find themselves effectively silenced by this bug, or have to post seemingly illiterate posts because the bug prevents editing.

Freezing during scrolling

Wont let you scroll and if it does it takes a LONG time and then after waiting for it to allow you to scroll it often times will either freeze or boot you out. Prefer the old version, fix it or I am deleting it!

Updated app

Not good. From front page of app (EJ news) news is not updated often enough and sometimes stories are repeated over and over. If you are going to have an app keep it current if its news. Ads pop up 1st thing. Annoying.

GREAT!

Made my night.

Old app was better

Tech issues aside, the real issue here the articles, which are now titled like click bait. It is embarrassing. If I wanted this kind of news, I would have downloaded the Edmonton sun app. Disappointed in the journal. App deleted.

Terrible

Just terrible, thats all I can say.

Awful!

Its generally several days behind in showing the local news. It will often show the same page for a week. Its just easier to go to the Journal website.

Pretty Awful

The old app would open up and refresh with the latest news updates. Now it brings up the same articles from the last time you used it and good luck trying to figure out how to get it to refresh and update. A new full page splash ad always seems to load with no issues though.

Terrible app

This app has multiple issues and I would give it zero stars if I could. As other commenters noted, the headlines are now clickbait, which seriously reduces the credibility of this newspaper. As well, headlines are simply that: headlines. They should not be the first sentence of the story. There are frequent spelling and grammar mistakes in the stories; whoever is in charge of creating these app-sized stories should be fired. Technical issues: scrolling is jerky and weird. There are too many ads, and commenting doesnt work more than half the time. Stories are repeated. Some stories wont load: today I clicked on a story (the Journal brought it in from the Washington Post) which was cut off in the middle of a sentence. Terrible app and will be deleting.

Stupid ads

I keep touching the ads and get redirected to a web page. Very very annoying!!! Cant you have ads without links? If not then make the ads smaller. I also wish they had a lot more local news. I like the Calgary Herald app better. I liked the layout of the old app better as it was more concise.

Change not necessarily for the better

Your previous version was a much better product. It actually had local stories it would update the stories on a regular basis and it had a comments section under a vast array of stories. Yes there was arguments and plenty of insight into the minds of others but it more often then not engaged readers interaction.

Biased

Im dropping this app because it is all too ORANGE for me. The only area not biased is the obits.

Perfect

Great bus app now that they fixed the glitch with nearby bus stops

Zero stars - brutal app

Since the new update, the ticker that shows current stock averages and the Canadian dollar has disappeared. What happened? That was about the only good thing about your e-paper. Overall, still a poor app. EJ needs to hire true professionals to try to put together a proper app.
